Written by internationally renowned and highly respected leaders in the field from the Institut Pasteur, France * 14 brand new chapters dedicated to coverage of historical and general aspects of bacterial toxins evaluated and summarized * Toxin applications in cell biology presented * Therapy (cancer therapy, dystonias) discussed * Vaccines (native and genetically engineered vaccines) featured * Toxins discussed as biological weapons, comprising chapters on anthrax, diphtheria, ricin etc. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. In addition, toxin research contributes to the understanding of the most potent biological agents known to man. Cholera, pertussis, botulinum, clostridium and tetanus toxins are all produced by bacteria. Within chemistry and physics, a poison is a substance that obstructs or inhibits a reaction, for example by binding to a catalyst. Agents that act on the nervous system can paralyze in seconds or less, and include both biologically derived neurotoxins and so-called nerve gases, which may be synthesized for warfare or industry.
